Among the keys to the whole ecomomic development picture will be a recovering housing and home building market. Recent statistics from national entities, including the Federal Reserve and the National Retail Federation, seem to point toward a light at the end of this long recession tunnel. Local indicators suggest Springfield's economy is on the mend, too.

"A lot of the things I look for are employment figures," said David Mitchell, associate professor of economics and director of the Bureau of Economic Research at Missouri State University, adding that recent employment numbers in Springfield are improving.
