Prep for AC Season – Save Money and Energy

Spring has finally arrived in the Ozarks, and before long, your air conditioner will be back to doing what it does best. Which means now is a great time to make sure everything is running as it should, so you don’t spend too many sweltering days parked in front of a box fan.

In addition to ensuring your system is in working order, there are several other cost- and energy-saving solutions to keep in mind as the temperature outside ticks up.

We know it’s tempting to set your air conditioner low, especially when stepping outside is only slightly preferable to leaping into a frying pan. However, even dialing your indoor temp to freezing won’t make your home cool any faster. Keep your air conditioner set as high as you can while still being comfortable. For those among us who are cold-natured in spirit—meaning you freeze in spring-like conditions—you probably won’t require the same use as someone who can’t cool off. If you are comfortable with seventy-five degrees, embrace it, and save money while you’re at it.

Always keep use in mind with your air conditioners. If you’re going away for the weekend, turn the unit off or at least way up. If you have window units, only run them when the room in question is occupied. This will help both conserve energy and provide relief to your utility bill.

If you do have fans—ceiling, box, or otherwise—use them in conjunction with your air-conditioner to both expedite immediate relief and help keep tabs on utility usage. If you’re going to be home on a hot day, dress for warmer indoor temperatures and make use out of your blinds or shades to keep comfortable. Also, welcome in fresh air through open windows when possible, but make sure you’re not air-conditioning the outdoors at the same time.

Lastly, be sure your thermostat is in an area away from lamps or the television. Artificial light does emit heat, so lamplight can convince your thermostat to keep your air conditioner running longer than necessary. For those thermostats in hallways and similar areas, be selective when switching on the overhead.

Regardless of how much or little exercise your air conditioner gets, make sure to clean or replace air filters on a regular basis. This will help ensure air flow encounters no obstacles and the air itself remains clean.
