Members Talk Housing to State Legislators

A group of builder members and associate Coalition Advocacy Investors hopped on a bus
earlier this month to talk housing with area legislators in the Capitol. There are currently dozens of bills being monitored by the HBA of Missouri’s lobbyist, Jewell Patek of Patek & Associates. Senator Bob Dixon (District 30) updated HBA members regarding the session and answered their questions during lunch in the historic Missouri Capitol.

The HBA of Greater Springfield discussed support of Senate Bill 179 with legislators during the visit. This proposal is sponsored by Senator Mike Parson (from the Bolivar area) and it would create a temporary tax deduction for every purchaser of a newly built home in Missouri.  And, as home building is a “shovel-ready” industry, jobs would be created immediately with every new home constructed. In one year, in the Springfield area, one single-family home will produce (on average): 2.49 local jobs for one year, $136,780  in local income and $14,702 in taxes and other revenue for local governments. For additional information about how the bill works, along with other issues discussed with legislators, click here to read talking points.

HBA members had the opportunity to meet with many of our area legislators including several “freshman” serving their first term: Rep. Elijah Haahr, Rep. Kevin Austin, Rep. Jeff Messenger and Rep. Sonja Murray Anderson.
