DIY with a Purpose

For the past seven months, the Habitat for Humanity has partnered with the Springfield-Greene County Library District to provide educational workshops for library patrons free of charge called “DIY with a Purpose”. Members of Habitat’s construction team led programs with a variety of topics including tiling basics, exterior home maintenance, toilet trouble shooting and more.

At every class, library patrons were encouraged to ask questions about specific problems they were experiencing at home. During the “Toilet Troubleshooting” class, a patron expressed how she had been dealing with a troubling sound her toilet had been making and how she had hired two different handymen to fix the problem without success. By the end of the class, Habitat’s construction team gave her an idea and the patron left feeling confident she could DIY the solution to her toilet problem.

Habitat for Humanity also gained great volunteers from the DIY with a Purpose education program. Several patrons registered to help with the Women Build project, and others signed up for general volunteer opportunities. Habitat also gained a special volunteer when a retired gentleman indicated he was board and rarin’ to go to help out on a job site.

The DIY with a Purpose classes also served as a great opportunity to introduce the community to Habitat for Humanity’s home repair programs. After learning about the variety of home repair programs Habitat offers, one attendee was encourage to apply to receive help with some of the overwhelming repair issues she was experiencing at home.

Habitat was pleased to offer the seven class series for library patrons. With close to 60 attendees and seven different DIY topics to cover, the community is ready to tackle more DIY projects. We are grateful for such a wonderful construction team to offer their expertise teaching the programs, and for a great community partner with the Springfield-Greene County Library District to host the program
