Rachael and I have been saying “good-bye” to friends for a little over a month now, and that part isn’t getting any easier. Last night, we were blessed with a privilege that very few people are afforded: an evening with friends, designed by friends, for the sole purpose of heaping kindness on us as we prepare to depart for the next chapter in our lives.
The cold truth is that people don’t normally get around to doing something like that for you until your funeral! So, I guess for me, it was a little like attending my own funeral – complete with Diet Coke costumes, sombreros, cowbells, Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken, and a hilarious blooper reel. In fact, now that I reflect on the evening, I have to say that’s pretty much how I hope my actual funeral ends up going. You’ve set the bar high, my friends! Kidding aside, I was reminded again last night (and Rachael and I have been reminded frequently in recent weeks), just how immensely grateful we are for your friendship.
After nearly twelve years on the job, tomorrow is my last official day as CEO of the Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield. In a couple of weeks, I will officially commence duties as the new Executive Vice President of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders. Rachael and I (and our kiddos, Annie and Alex) have been led to make what for us is a life-altering decision through much prayer and reflection.
It is our family’s most earnest desire to serve God in the place and capacity where He calls us. We confidently believe this is His call for the next chapter in our lives. And we are certain He has a plan and purpose for us there – much of which we do not yet see, but which we trust by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7).
While we are here, will you permit your friend to share one gentle and loving encouragement? Many of you already know firsthand the truth of what I am about to share. But for those who haven’t experienced it for themselves, please know: the same is true for you, as you seek Him with a surrendered heart: He has a plan and purpose for you. One that is far greater than anything you or I can ever map out or figure out for ourselves. Here is just the beginning of what I’m talking about: 2 Corinthians 5:17; John 15:5; Philippians 4:12-13; Jeremiah 29:11-13 … and that’s barely scratching the surface… I’d better not get started now on just how big and good our God is – and on the limitless joy available through Him – because I’ll never stop!).
I want you to know what an enormous honor it has been for me to serve such an outstanding organization of wonderful people for more than a decade. I take great satisfaction in the fact that our shared stewardship of this association has led to remarkable achievements over the course of the last twelve years. In fact, part of what gives me peace that this is the right decision is the fact that the HBA of Greater Springfield is better equipped and prepared for transition today than it has been at any point in its history. Led by an exemplary board, and served by what I believe is the best HBA staff in the country, difficult (but necessary) decisions already have been made that position the HBA for increasing success in the years ahead. And I am confident those greater successes do lie ahead for the HBA of Greater Springfield.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve alongside you. You are – and will always remain – high in my heart, thoughts and prayers.
With Deepest Personal Gratitude and Friendship,
